In May 2007, a truck carrying 180 kilos of electronics rear-ended Lori Coble’s minivan on a highway in Ladera Ranch, California. Kyle was 5, Emma 4, and Katie just 2. All three died. Lori and her mother Cindy were knocked unconscious, but survived.
Three months later, Lori and her husband Chris began an in vitro fertilization process. From ten eggs retrieved, exactly three viable embryos resulted: two girls and a boy, the same sex combination as their deceased children. The couple took it as a sign and had all three implanted. On May 1, 2008, almost exactly one year after the accident, Ashley, Ellie, and Jake were born. In 2010, the family told their story on The Oprah Winfrey Show.
Now, years later, Lori received a diagnosis of terminal brain cancer. Doctors offered her two paths: without treatment, one or two months to live; with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgeries, a little more time. She chose to fight. Just as she had done before.
