At 29, Siarra Marshall-Lutton, from Nashville, United States, made a decision she had been considering for years: to undergo surgery to have her breasts removed because she never felt they were part of the image she wanted to live with.
When she woke up from the operation and saw her chest for the first time, she burst into tears, but not out of sadness.
“It was perfect. At last, I felt that my body was truly mine”, she recalled, according to what she told Daily Star.
However, sharing that happiness on social media came at an unexpected cost: the video in which she showed the result of the surgery went viral and received millions of views, but also an enormous wave of criticism, mockery, and even threats directed at both her and the surgeon who performed the procedure.
What struck her most was the difference in treatment.
“No one says anything when a woman decides to enlarge her breasts, but when someone decides to remove them, suddenly everyone has an opinion”, she said.
The experience was so difficult that for months she avoided appearing in public for fear of being recognized by those who insulted her online. Over time, she says she learned to ignore those comments and now says she feels completely at peace with the decision she made.
She also explained that the change coincided with another important transformation in her life: leaving alcohol and drugs behind. According to her, achieving sobriety allowed her to regain the confidence to make decisions she had been putting off for years and begin a new chapter with her partner.
Today, she uses her social media to talk about self-esteem, mental health, and self-acceptance, convinced that every person should be able to make decisions about their own body without becoming the target of attacks.
“If a decision gives you peace and makes you feel free, you do not need anyone’s approval”, she concluded.
