The case that has shocked Colombia is that of Yulixa Toloza, a 52-year-old woman who disappeared after undergoing a cosmetic procedure at an alleged clandestine clinic in southern Bogotá. According to the investigations, she went to the “Beauty Láser” aesthetic center to undergo laser lipolysis, but the procedure allegedly went wrong and her health rapidly deteriorated.

The friends who accompanied her said that, after the procedure, Yulixa began having difficulty breathing, purple lips, and loss of consciousness. Security cameras captured the moment when two men took her out of the place semi-conscious and put her into a private vehicle. After that, all trace of her was completely lost for several days. Authorities also discovered that the establishment had no health permits or authorization to perform surgeries.

As the investigation progressed, Colombian authorities stated that the alleged “surgeon” who operated on her had no medical training and actually worked as a stylist and hairdresser. It was also reported that several people linked to the center fled the scene after the patient’s complications. The case sparked enormous outrage in Colombia over the operation of clandestine clinics and illegal cosmetic procedures promoted on social media.
In addition, the case took an international turn after authorities captured in Venezuela Eduardo Ramos, identified as the alleged “surgeon” who operated on Yulixa and who, according to the investigations, actually worked as a stylist and barber with no medical training. Along with him, two other suspects linked to the “Beauty Láser” aesthetic center were also arrested. The Prosecutor’s Office is also investigating the alleged irregular use of ketamine during the procedure and the removal of an excessive amount of fat, factors that allegedly caused the victim’s rapid deterioration and unleashed a tragedy that today shocks all of Colombia.

Finally, Yulixa’s body was found abandoned near a road in Apulo, Cundinamarca. Bogotá Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán described the incident as “a murder”. Authorities are investigating possible crimes of homicide, medical negligence, and concealment of evidence, while the search continues for other suspects who allegedly fled toward Venezuela.
