In August 1972, two friends were leaving a movie theater in Fairview Park, Ohio, when they saw something strange. A shopping cart leaning against their car, with a paper bag inside. The bag moved. Inside was a newborn baby girl, clean and wrapped in a blanket, as if someone had left her there with all the care in the world.
They called her “Baby Westgate”, after the shopping center where she was found. She was adopted months later and grew up knowing nothing about her origins. Not a name, not a date, not a reason. Her life changed in 2023, when Ohio allowed access to adoption records and Pearl Marshall, now 53 and a music teacher in Virginia, obtained her original birth certificate.
With the help of a local historian and even an anonymous comment on a news story, Pearl reconstructed her story piece by piece. She found the women who discovered her, her biological father and, finally, this year, her mother. A 22-year-old woman who sang lullabies to her unborn daughter and who, after leaving her, worked for years at that same shopping center to be close to her.
