“I am alive because I follow a plant-based diet”, Penny says.

Over the last few years, the rise of veganism has been noticeable. Many people have chosen this lifestyle for different reasons. Because that is what it is: one of many ways of standing before the world. Anyone who thinks being vegan is a fad should read this post.

In England alone, according to The Vegan Society, over the last four years the number of people who identify as vegan has grown exponentially. From 150.000 in 2014 to 600.000 in 2016 and, although they have not yet determined the current figure, it is estimated to be much higher.

The reasons why people adopt this way of living vary: for health, for the defense of animal rights, for pleasure, and a long etcetera. And all of them are equally valid.

But, despite the fact that they may have different reasons, what they all agree on is that being vegan brings invaluable personal well-being.

Penny Lown, a 55-year-old woman from Cornwall, is one of them, and her case is impressive. According to her account, veganism helped her overcome cancer.

Six months to live and a maximum of one year was what doctors predicted for Penny. After noticing that she had terminal-stage pancreatic cancer, that was all they could think.

And although the diagnosis was devastating, the woman decided to try anyway. She thought that changing her eating habits and beginning a healthy life could, in some way, contribute to her improvement. And that is what happened.

In addition to chemotherapy and the surgeries involved in the treatment, Penny decided to adopt veganism as a lifestyle.

Five years have passed.

“After the surgery I felt like a helpless, wounded animal. Then I could not consume anything that involved the suffering of animals. I was that animal, suffering, practically in the hands of fate”, Penny told UNILAD.

Along with that, after her treatment, the woman was forced to change her diet. “When my body recovered and healed, I could only fuel it with “pure” fuel. The more I did it, the better I felt, and I do not want to spend the rest of my life feeling anxious about the possibility of the cancer coming back”, she added.

For Penny it is simple: her diet helps keep chronic illnesses from returning. According to her, she has studied and read a lot about it, and she is sure about her lifestyle.

“I am alive because I follow a plant-based diet and I am absolutely sure that is why I recovered so well. A plant-based diet keeps my blood sugar levels steady, helping me with my diabetes, and it is the healthiest diet I can have”, she says.

And her well-being is not only physical. As a result of her experience and her change in eating habits, she says her view of the world changed. Now she looks at life differently and cares about both her physical condition and her emotional and spiritual state.
