They heard crying. They thought it was an animal.

Inside a tied yellow plastic bag was a newborn baby girl. She still had the umbilical cord attached to her body.
She weighed just 6 pounds and 5 ounces. She had been there for hours, alone, in the middle of nowhere.
The nurses who received her gave her a name from a list for unidentified babies: they called her India.
An officer opened the bag. His body camera recorded the moment. He can be heard apologizing to her, as if she could understand.
Hours after she was found, a severe storm hit that area. Sheriff Ron Freeman called it divine intervention.
Nearly four years passed without answers. Until in May 2023, a DNA test led authorities to Karima Jiwani, 40, identified as the biological mother and charged with abandoning her own daughter in the woods.
Georgia has a law that allows a newborn to be left at a hospital or fire station without legal consequences. She did not use it.
Baby India is healthy today. Someone abandoned her. Others decided that crying in the woods should not be ignored.
