Crying was coming from a storm drain in Newlands East, near Durban, South Africa.
That is how they found her. No one knew that down there, more than seven meters deep, there was a newborn baby.
Someone had left her inside a stormwater pipe. She was only hours old.
A neighbor heard the crying coming from the drain opening and called emergency services. Dozens of rescuers arrived.
They dug a trench by hand. They shored up the earthen walls so they would not collapse. Some neighbors ran to their homes and returned with kitchen cabinet doors to reinforce the hole.
With chisel and hammer, they broke through the concrete pipe, centimeter by centimeter, for nearly four hours.
Garrith Jamieson, of Rescue Care Paramedics, led the operation. No one left until they got her out.
She was flown by helicopter to Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital. She only had mild hypothermia and a few scrapes.
Dr. Sibongiseni Dhlomo, a regional health official, put it this way: it was a miracle.
Police opened an attempted murder investigation. To this day, no one knows who left her there.
