In May 1999, Anna Bågenholm had an accident while skiing near Narvik, Norway, and ended up trapped under the ice of a river. ❄️
For about 40 minutes, she managed to breathe thanks to a small pocket of air, until she lost consciousness and her heart stopped. The rescue team battled the ice until, at around 19:40, they managed to free her: she had been trapped for 80 minutes.
When she was brought out, she was not breathing, had no pulse, and her body temperature had dropped to 13.7 °C. The doctors managed to revive her through a complex process of rewarming and extracorporeal circulation.
Anna spent weeks in the hospital and months recovering. Against all odds, she regained her abilities and returned to work as a doctor that same year. Her case became one of the most extraordinary documented episodes of survival from hypothermia. ❤️
