Alyssa McDonald was two years old when boiling butter fell onto her face. The burns were so severe that she spent two weeks in a coma. It was the beginning of a life unlike the one she had been asked if she wanted to live.
What came next were more than one hundred surgeries. Hospitals, anesthesia, bandages changed over and over again while her body tried to heal something the fire had marked forever.
At school, she found no refuge. They called her a monster. They laughed at her scars as if they were a mistake that had to be hidden or corrected. Alyssa grew up hearing that her face was a problem to be solved.
And then, at some point, she decided to stop trying to solve it.
She said enough to reconstructive surgeries. Not because she had lost hope, but because she found something greater: her own. She began to look at herself differently. To name differently what she saw.
Today, she wears her scars like someone wearing diamonds. She does not hide them, apologize for them, or explain them. She shows them. And through her social media, she became the voice of those who were also called monsters at some point.
Sometimes the greatest victory is not erasing the marks. It is deciding what they mean.
