“She didn’t have the money to leave Eric or the money to save his business. There was one way to move forward: Eric had to disappear.” With those words, prosecutor Brad Bloodworth summed up the motive behind the incident that shocked the United States.

Kouri Richins, a mother of three and the author of a children’s book about grief after her husband lost his life, was found guilty of poisoning Eric Richins.

Believe it or not, Kouri’s Google searches were presented as evidence at trial. “What is a lethal dose of such-and-such remedy?”, “What is Kouri Richins’s net worth?” and “If someone dies from poisoning, how is the cause recorded on the death certificate?” were some of the things the defendant searched for. “She didn’t search for what happens if someone suffers an accidental overdose,” the prosecutor said.

The woman, who could face life in prison without parole, bowed her head when the verdict was read. Her sentencing is scheduled for May 13.
