Sheru was just one year old when he stopped working as a service dog for Indian Railways.
The Belgian Malinois had undergone surgery for a brain tumor, but the mass returned and continued to grow. That was how this young dog, who had served in the railway system, ended up at the Blue Cross of India shelter, an animal welfare organization based in Chennai.

According to the organization itself, Sheru arrived with something special: discipline, obedience and an affable nature. During the months he spent there, he stopped being just another resident. The staff saw him every day, cared for him and grew fond of his quiet strength and nobility, until he became part of their routine and won everyone’s heart.
Recently, Sheru died from complications arising from his illness. Blue Cross said goodbye to him as a hero of railway service and a member of its family, and expressed gratitude that in his final months he had known care, kindness and love.
“Run free, brave friend”, they wrote as they said goodbye.
