Had you ever seen a giraffe with these lumps on its skin? A shocking video of a giraffe covered in strange lumps in a national park in South Africa went viral. Many thought of deadly parasites, but veterinarians explained that “it is the papillomavirus, which causes giant warts”.

The big twist in the story involves oxpeckers, birds that clean the giraffe’s skin. The biologist in charge explained that “these birds, while looking for food, ended up transmitting the virus from one animal to another through their beaks”.

Fortunately, these lesions are benign. The giraffe continues feeding completely normally, although it is usually bothersome for her; it shows that wildlife is very strange but can also be cruel. Not only humans can have this virus, and this giraffe is an example of that.
