Sicilia Salcedo opened Instagram and saw her own face on an account she follows: Girl Scouts.

She’s 18 and belongs to the Sierra Nevada troop. The photo, posted on Tuesday, September 29, shows her wearing a deliberately frayed striped sweater, a spiked necklace, smeared black lipstick, and a vest covered in patches. To spotlight her, the organization chose her Gold Award project: educational videos and live presentations to teach pet owners how to care for bearded dragons. She identified a real problem—that many owners don’t have access to reliable information—and gave talks on responsible pet ownership to younger scouts.

The post racked up tens of thousands of likes. Hot Topic and Monster High commented, and she replied with a “THATS ME GUYS!!!!!”. One mother said she couldn’t wait to show her 9-year-old daughter, a Goth Scout, her new role model. Sicilia sums it up this way: she doesn’t label herself, is fine with being called goth or emo, but prefers “alternative”.
