Nykia Hamilton never asked to become famous. She was just trying to survive an impossible shift.

In July, a customer recorded this single mother from Columbia, South Carolina, preparing fries, burgers, and sandwiches alone at a Burger King for 12 hours. The video exploded: thousands called her a hero, while others demanded that her pay be increased. Hamilton, a mother of three —ages 7 years, 8 months, and 2 months— became overnight “the Burger King mom”. But on August 8, 2025, everything changed: in tears, she said that she had been fired for being late because of her children, with no babysitter to help her.

Burger King says the real reason was repeated attendance problems, and that no employee should be left alone in charge of a restaurant. As the controversy grew, a GoFundMe campaign raised more than $130,000 for her. With that money, she bought a car with air conditioning, paid off debts, started a cleaning business, and took her children to a water park for the first time in their lives.

Days ago, she paid her own mother’s rent and made her cry on camera. “Since you have blessed me, I will bless my mom”, she told her.
