Sable could no longer walk.
She weighed nearly 100 pounds, with gray fur from the years and legs that gave out halfway along the Golden Eagle Trail in Tiadaghton State Forest, Pennsylvania. Her owner, Kevin Matthews, stayed by her side, unable to move her even one more meter. Nearly two miles from the starting point, the only option was to ask for help.
Six volunteer firefighters from the Waterville Volunteer Fire Company arrived. None of them hesitated. They placed her on a rescue stretcher and carried her together along the rocky trail for four and a half hours, taking turns with the weight and watching every step so as not to hurt her further. Firefighter Tiffany Young was one of the hands that never let go of her.
When they finally reached the bottom, Sable was reunited with Kevin. Today, she is recovering at home, possibly from a sprain in her front leg. No one paid them for it. They simply did it because someone, even if she had four legs, needed to get back home.
