A vendor holds out a hand and receives what looks like foreign money. They look at it. They don’t know that currency. They accept it. They hand over their goods, give real change, and go on with their day without knowing they have just been robbed.
That is exactly what a trend circulating on social media shows: tourists traveling to developing countries carrying counterfeit bills, knowing in advance that local vendors have no way to tell whether a foreign note is genuine or not. The logic of the scam is brutal in its simplicity: the money looks legitimate because no one in that market has seen it before. And it works.
What some call a “travel hack” is, in concrete terms, stealing from those least able to afford the loss. Not from a bank or a corporation: from a street vendor with a box of coins on the table. The fact that it is filmed and shared as content makes everything considerably worse.
