Celia was 78 years old. Her brother Emilio, 82. They were found locked inside a house in downtown Tepic, Nayarit, with no food, with no one to answer for them. They ate plastic to trick their hunger.
That ulcer ended up perforating Celia’s stomach and killed her, as prosecutor Ludmila Heredia confirmed. The Nayarit government paid for her funeral and the governor donated the plot of land to bury her. No family member showed up.
Some blame the neighboring laundry business that had committed to caring for them and failed to do so. Others point to the family that disappeared. Who bears more responsibility: the one who promises to care and abandons them, or the one who never showed up?
