Mr. Ye lost his balance on Wanning beach and an underwater current swept him out to sea.

Li Shuda, a police officer who was off duty that day, saw the scene from shore and didn’t hesitate for a second: he plunged into the water. He knew the currents along that coast like the back of his hand, and thanks to that and his swimming skills, he managed to push him toward some rocks and bring him out alive using rescue equipment. It wasn’t the first time—in May, he had already saved another person who fell into the sea while he was on patrol.

Mr. Ye gave him a thank-you banner. But when the rescue video went viral, the internet decided to focus on something else: Li Shuda’s defined chest and face. The comments filled with “save me too” and requests for his contact information. Meanwhile, he continues teaching drowning prevention in Wanning, with the same seriousness as always—unaware that he is already, unintentionally, China’s most desired lifeguard.
