Arcadia mayor in Southern California, United States, Eileen Wang submitted her resignation after admitting that she operated under the direct orders of Beijing agents between 2020 and 2022, spreading propaganda in favor of China on her website, risking 10 years in prison.
According to a previous investigation, she received help from her husband and campaign manager, Yaoning Sun, who is currently serving a four-year sentence on the same charges.
Despite the charges against her, the former official said that she placed her trust in the wrong people and that they “led her into deception”. At the same time, Arcadia’s administration clarified that the crimes were individual and occurred before she was elected mayor.
