Steve Ginther was holding a tiny kitten when the first photo was taken.
It was February 2006, and the kitten was named Dublin. Steve had no idea that this little one would stay by his side for two decades. The years passed amid purrs, moves, and shared routines, until a date worth celebrating arrived in 2026: Dublin was turning 20.
To mark the occasion, Steve posted two photographs taken twenty years apart. In the first, a much younger Steve appears with the kitten in his hands. In the second, they are together again, and time has left its mark on both of them.
The comparison went viral and moved thousands of people. Some posts claim that Steve took a photo every year, but what is documented are those two images. Perhaps that’s why they work so well: at a glance, they say something that anyone who has loved a pet immediately recognizes. They’re companions, but also part of our story.
