Stuart Hutchison was 25 years old and had spent eight years fighting brain cancer that in June had spread to his bones and pelvis. Faced with the relentless advance of the disease, he decided to spend his final weeks at his mother’s home in Scotland, with her as his full-time caregiver.

On August 11, while his wife Danielle stayed by his side, her father went to get some glasses from the home the couple shared. There he noticed that Nero, Stuart’s French bulldog, looked ill and rushed him to the vet. The doctors found a rupture in the dog’s spine.

Stuart died at 1:15 in the afternoon. Nero died just 15 minutes later, according to what his mother, Fiona Conaghan, told the Mirror. He had two other dogs, but his bond with Nero was different: they went everywhere together. Danielle was devastated by the double loss on the same day.
