Tania was only a few years old when life took her parents away from her and, with them, her sister.
Glynis and she were separated when they were very young, and each grew up in a different home, in different countries, with the other’s absence becoming a sad habit. Tania became a teacher and ended up living in Umm Al Quwain, United Arab Emirates. Glynis married, was widowed, and settled in Vancouver, Canada. Between them lay 33 years of photos that did not see them grow up and birthdays celebrated from afar.
On August 7, they decided to end that distance. Tania flew from Dubai and Glynis from Vancouver, and the two met outside Toronto Pearson Airport. A friend of Glynis recorded the exact moment they recognized each other: the embrace, the tears, and Glynis’s hand searching for her sister’s face, as if to confirm that after so much time, it was real. Afterwards, they walked together to a nearby café to reclaim in one afternoon the three decades that fate had stolen from them.
