Ana Luiza de Oliveira Neves was 17 years old and lived in Itapecerica da Serra, São Paulo. On her birthday, a delivery person brought her a cake with no sender, accompanied by a card with hearts and affectionate words. She recorded an audio message for her friends, excitedly trying to guess who had sent it to her.
An hour after eating it, she began to feel unwell. She was taken to a medical center, diagnosed with food poisoning, and discharged. Hours later, she fainted in the bathroom of her home and died from cardiorespiratory arrest.
Police determined that the cake contained arsenic oxide, purchased online by a 17-year-old schoolmate who had slept at her house that night. The young woman confessed to the crime out of jealousy and resentment, and admitted that on May 15 she had already tried to poison another teenager, who survived.
