Terri Irwin was 42 years old when Steve’s heart stopped beating in front of the cameras.

It was September 4, 2006, near the Great Barrier Reef, in Australia. A stingray pierced him while he was filming a documentary, and the world lost the Crocodile Hunter. Twenty years later, Terri wrote that grief ‘still walks with me like my shadow’ and recalled the last six weeks they spent together as a family, during an expedition to investigate crocodiles, as their ‘long and sweet goodbye.’

Her daughter Bindi also shared a message that moved thousands: Grace, her daughter who is just 5 years old, watches Steve’s documentaries every morning and calls him ‘crocodile grandpa’ without ever having met him. Meanwhile, Terri remained at the helm of Australia Zoo and Wildlife Warriors, holding in her hands everything he built. 🐊💔
