“That’s not Vinícius”: the viral theory claiming the footballer was replaced by a lookalike after the World Cup

In Brazil, someone looked at Vinícius’s thighs and found a conspiracy 😨

The theory originated on Brazilian forums and TikTok accounts and has now crossed the Atlantic: according to its authors, the forward supposedly disappeared under mysterious circumstances after the 2026 World Cup and was replaced by a lookalike to fulfill advertising contracts. The spark was his lackluster performances in Brazil’s friendlies against Australia.

The supposed evidence: the player who appeared with the national team supposedly didn’t have the same tattoos on his thigh as Vinícius at Real Madrid, and his face had also supposedly changed. But the snowball kept rolling. An account with more than 122,000 followers claimed that the CIA and Rothschild had eliminated and replaced him; other versions talk of a murder in a favela and even reptilians who supposedly took Vinícius and Neymar away. A Brazilian clairvoyant recounted a dream about a mass abduction in a field in Miami.

None of this is backed by evidence. What is real is the player’s poor form: Brazil lost in the round of 16 to Norway and since then neither the national team nor he has been the same. Even so, he scored again during this international break and was candid: “Losing a World Cup is tough and coming back is never easy”.
