In 2004, Rolf Bantle, an FC Basel fan, traveled to Milan to watch his team play against Inter at San Siro.
During the match, he went to the bathroom and, when he came out, became disoriented and was unable to find the other fans or the bus that was supposed to take him back to Switzerland.
Without a phone or enough money, he ended up staying in Milan and living on the streets. The incredible thing is that he did not return home until 11 years later.
During all that time, he survived as best he could on the streets of Milan, occasionally helped by neighbors and other people who knew him.
In 2015, he suffered a fall and fractured his femur; when he was admitted to the hospital, they discovered his identity and contacted the Swiss authorities, which finally made it possible to take him back to Basel.
Bantle grew accustomed to his life in Milan and said he enjoyed the freedom he had there. Until life’s twists and turns took him back to Basel 11 years later.
