“The best thing you can do for your marriage is get rid of that king mattress and sleep in a queen bed. We wound up shoulder to shoulder and, I’m telling you, that’s good for marriage”. —Matthew McConaughey

Who would have thought the secret wasn’t couples therapy, but buying a smaller bed 😂.

Matthew McConaughey said in his book Poems & Prayers that one of his tips for marriage is to get rid of the king mattress and sleep on a queen-size one. The phrase drew so much attention that he later had to explain where it came from.

As he recounted, he and Camila Alves had seen a huge bed at some friends’ house where they could all sleep with their children. They liked the idea so much that they ended up getting an even bigger bed to accommodate the whole family. The problem arose when Levi, Vida, and Livingston grew up and stopped climbing into bed with them.

McConaughey said that one day he woke up and felt that Camila was “about a football field away”. He even joked that, if they wanted to cuddle, each of them had to cross half the mattress to meet in the middle. That’s when they decided to replace it with a queen-size one.

Since then, he says they sleep “shoulder to shoulder” and that this physical closeness has done them good as a couple. He has also said that, even though they have three children, he tries to remember that before they are parents, they are still husband and wife, and that nurturing that bond is also a way of setting an example for them.

After nearly two decades together, Matthew seems to have it figured out: sometimes a little less space in bed can mean a little more closeness in a marriage.
