The Blue Java banana looks like it came straight out of a filter, but it really exists. 🍌💙
Originally from Southeast Asia, this variety develops, while still green, a striking silvery-blue hue caused by a natural waxy coating. Today it is also grown in Hawaii and other tropical regions of the Pacific, where it is especially well known. As it ripens, it loses that color and its peel turns yellow like that of other bananas.
It is also known as “Ice Cream Banana” because of its especially creamy flesh and a flavor that some compare to vanilla. It also tolerates cold better than many common varieties.
That said, images of completely blue bananas circulating on social media tend to exaggerate their real color quite a bit.
