Good Hope has breakfast at 9:15 AM, eats fish from a holder made with popsicle sticks, and lives surrounded by the six calmest neighbors at the New England Aquarium in Boston. 🐧 He is 36 years old — an age that in the wild would be completely impossible for an African penguin, whose wild life expectancy is around 10 to 15 years.
Since February 2025, this group of seven elderly penguins has been moved to a separate, quieter enclosure near the aquarium’s main entrance. Without the bustle of the younger colonies, without shoving or unnecessary squawking. The staff describe them, with some pride, as “the best-behaved group” in the whole place. 😄
Good Hope’s family already has its own history: his mother Deco lived nearly 42 years before dying in 2023, becoming one of the longest-lived African penguins ever recorded. In captivity, this species — native to the coasts of South Africa and Namibia — can live up to two and a half times longer than in its natural habitat.
