Kelly Stech had been dreaming of this day for months.
A week before her wedding in Chicago, she began to feel a strange pain in her ear. Doctors told her that everything was normal. But the next day, her ear was swollen and covered in blisters, and the right side of her face simply stopped moving. She vomited nonstop, felt as if she had been hit by a truck, and when she tried to smile in front of the mirror, she realized that something serious was happening.
She was diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, the same condition Justin Bieber revealed he had in 2022: shingles attacks the facial nerve and paralyzes one side of the face. Even so, Kelly didn’t cancel anything. She cut the guest list from 200 to 50, hired a professional makeup artist to disguise the paralysis, and walked down the aisle with a handkerchief covering her right eyelid, which had stopped blinking.
Today, eight months pregnant, she has completely regained mobility in her face. And she tells every bride stressed about the details of her wedding the same thing: the shoes and the weather matter less than you think.
