Vishal Garg thought he had already lived through his worst week in 2021.
That time, he fired more than 900 employees on a Zoom call that lasted just minutes, right before Christmas, and the whole world branded him the most ruthless boss on the internet. He apologized, said he had lacked “the proper respect”, and remained at the helm of Better Home & Finance for nearly five years.
Until Daniel Lewis, a hedge fund manager, joined the board on July 27, 2026. It took him just one week to convince all the other members to vote, without Garg present and unanimously, for his removal over “judgment, temperament and credibility”. Now Garg has hired attorney Alex Spiro, tells CNN that Lewis “deceived him” and offers to work for free, for just $1 a year, in order to regain the seat he himself held while firing people over video calls.
