Authorities in Argentina managed to unlock the cellphone of Rocío Alvarito, the 26-year-old woman who died last February after falling from a second-floor apartment. The device contained videos recorded by Rocío herself just minutes before the tragedy, and they reportedly contradict the version of events given by her boyfriend, Marcos Ariel García.

While he claims he tried to save her, the footage appears to show a very different reality inside the apartment

“Look at how he bruised me,” Rocío says in the video while showing marks on her arm and a broken door. In the recording, her voice can be heard trembling as she describes her partner as “violent and abusive” shortly before the fall. According to investigators, the young woman did not jump willingly, but was instead trying to escape a situation involving confinement and alleged abuse.

García is currently being held on charges of abandonment and unlawful deprivation of liberty. Although he stated, “I ran downstairs to catch her,” the video evidence seems to suggest that the tragedy happened because Rocío panicked after feeling trapped. Her family is now pushing for the case to officially be classified as a femicide.
