Look closely at the image. At first glance it may seem like an ordinary photograph, but there is one detail that completely changes the perspective. The scale between the people and the enormous trunk makes it clear that this is not just any tree, but one of dimensions that today seem hard to imagine.

This happened in 1891, when massive logging devastated ancient forests in the United States without anyone truly measuring what was being lost. These specimens had taken centuries, perhaps millennia, to reach that size. They fell in a matter of hours, with hand saws and the promise of cheap lumber for a civilization that was growing without looking back.

Today those species of giant trees almost no longer exist outside protected reserves. The photo you see is one of the few pieces of evidence left of a landscape that will never exist again.
