Alice Weidel has just won a regional election in Germany at the helm of AfD, the far-right party that grows with every vote.
Her name is being repeated across social media, but not only because of the votes. Weidel opposes marriage equality and advocates a traditional family model, even though she is married to Sarah Bossard, her partner of many years. Together they are raising two children in Switzerland, where Weidel lives as an immigrant while her party calls for a hard-line approach to immigration in Germany. Sarah, for her part, is Swiss of Sri Lankan origin.
Weidel supports civil unions, but rejects calling the union between same-sex couples marriage, and also refuses to be labeled as part of the queer movement. She says she is only seeking to protect the idea of family in which she believes.
