The French animator, co-director of Despicable Me and the official voice of all the Minions, answered in 2015 the question that half the internet had been asking for years: why isn’t any Minion a woman? His explanation, given to TheWrap and later repeated by The Guardian, was so direct that it sounded almost like an unintentional joke: he said that, seeing how dumb and stupid his yellow creatures tend to be, he simply couldn’t imagine them as girls.
The remark went viral just as the film ‘Minions’ was being released, starring an army of exclusively male characters—even the villain Scarlett Overkill, voiced by Sandra Bullock, stood out as an oddity in that universe—. Coffin also revealed that Minions do not reproduce or split, so not even biology explained the absence of women in the most famous factory of fools in animated cinema.
