Morocco made history. They eliminated the Netherlands on penalties in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup. Thousands of fans took to the streets of The Hague, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Utrecht to celebrate that feat.

But the celebration did not end in hugs. In the Schilderswijk district of The Hague, riot police responded with water cannons, dogs, and baton charges.

The videos circulating show officers knocking down young people and hitting them on the legs before handcuffing them on the ground. There were approximately a dozen detainees.

There were also fireworks and stones thrown at the officers. But the images of police force have already sparked the political debate in the Netherlands, where several lawmakers are demanding stricter measures.

Where does maintaining order end and abuse begin?
