In the Torres del Paine steppe of Chile, a wildlife photographer managed to freeze that moment when a small cougar raises its head and searches for its mother’s eyes. She looks toward the horizon, alert and watchful, with that calm only mothers who know they are protecting something greater than themselves possess. He has eyes only for her.
There are no words in that gaze, but none are needed. It is the same look any child gives to the one who cares for them: a mixture of admiration, trust, and the need to stay close. In the wildest nature on the planet, the tenderest gesture there is survives intact.
