This is how rescue teams have been working in Cali, Pereira, Manizales and Quibdó since a magnitude 7.4 earthquake shook Colombia on Monday, August 10, 2026. When someone raises a hand with a clenched fist, everyone stops: soldiers, volunteers, neighbors who came to help without anyone asking them to. They stop talking and moving rubble to try to hear a knock, a voice, any sign that someone is still alive beneath the concrete.
The gesture has become one of the most powerful images of the search efforts. A raised hand is enough for dozens of people to understand the same thing: they must remain silent. For a few seconds, every sound can make the difference between finding someone alive or passing by without hearing them.
There are already more than 290 dead and hundreds missing, and experts know that the window for finding survivors closes with every passing hour.
And yet, they remain there: hundreds of people who do not know one another, united by the same gesture and the same silence, refusing to stop searching.
