Darwin Núñez grew up in Artigas, a humble corner of Uruguay, without imagining that one day his name would be etched into Premier League history.
Before football, life was a challenge: “I went to bed alone with an empty stomach. But my mother was the one who went to bed with an empty stomach most often. I will never forget where I come from”.
“He made sure my brother and I ate first. My father worked in construction for eight or nine hours, and my mother walked the streets collecting bottles to sell”.
He came through the Peñarol academy, went through Almería and Benfica, and in 2022 Liverpool paid more than 84 million euros for him, breaking the record for the most expensive sale of a Uruguayan footballer.
Today Darwin has something no other player has achieved: he is the footballer with the most winning goals scored after the 90th minute and away from home in Premier League history.
