The image that hurts our soul

The image that hurts to look at. South Africa’s locker room erupts with joy: they have just qualified for the Round of 16 at a World Cup for the first time in their history. Everyone jumps, shouts, embraces. Everyone except one.

In a corner, sitting down, his gaze lost somewhere that was not that celebration, is Jayden Adams. The team smiles on the outside; inside, he carried a world.

Days earlier, in the middle of the training camp, he had received the news that his 72-year-old grandmother Marianna had passed away. They buried her while he defended his country on the other side of the ocean, unable to say goodbye. Even so, he played. He put on the jersey and gave it everything, with a broken soul.

Yesterday, at 25 years old, Jayden passed away. He leaves behind a wife, Aqueelah, and a five-year-old daughter. She said goodbye to him with words that shake you: “You were not only the love of my life, but also my greatest support and my best friend. A part of my heart went with you.”

May his story remind us of something urgent: behind every smile there may be a silent battle. Let us ask. Let us embrace. Let us listen in time.

Rest, Jayden. May the hugs that were missing here await you there. 🕊️🇿🇦
