The leafy seadragon: the fish that evolution turned into algae

400 leaf-shaped appendages, almost invisible fins, and movement so slow that no one notices it. 🌿 The leafy seadragon (Phycodurus eques) is not a plant — it is a fish, a direct relative of the seahorse — and its disguise is so perfect that you can stare right at it without distinguishing it from the seaweed floating beside it.

Its secret lies in those leafy appendages that grow all over its body: it does not use them to swim, only to deceive. It moves using almost transparent fins that vibrate slowly, completing the illusion that it is simply a leaf at the mercy of the current. 🐠 It is considered one of the best-camouflaged marine creatures in the entire world.

And if you want to see it in person, there is only one possible destination: the southern and western coasts of Australia, the only place on the planet where it lives. It is protected by law there, because something so extraordinary cannot simply disappear. 🌊
