In Sunset, San Francisco, there is a phone that is not connected to anything. And yet, every day someone picks up the receiver and begins to speak.
It is called Ocean Calling, and it was born from an idea by local artists Jamae Tasker and Sarah McCarthy Grimm, inspired by Japan’s famous Wind Phone. The installation is right where Ortega Street meets Ocean Beach, with a direct view of the Pacific, and anyone can approach it 24 hours a day, free of charge, without an appointment, without explanations.
There is no signal or coverage. What there is, is a space to say out loud what was never said in time: an apology, a farewell, a simple ‘I miss you.’ For many visitors, that gesture—speaking to the sea as if someone on the other side could hear—has become the most honest way to heal from a loss.
