Brandi Byrd Reynolds, 35, a mother of two daughters and a rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service, was kidnapped and shot to death on June 26, 2026 while working her route in the community of Hays, Wilkes County, North Carolina. The 911 call came in at 4:15 in the afternoon: a man was shooting a woman inside a vehicle at 304 Monteith Acres Road. When deputies arrived, Brandi was already dead.
The man arrested, William Craig Durham, 56, confessed to the crime, according to prosecutors. But what makes the case even more serious is what was revealed before the judge: a relative of Reynolds said that Durham had previously threatened her and had broken into her home in the past. Durham also had an extensive criminal record that included an assault conviction, prior kidnapping charges, witness intimidation, and illegal possession of weapons. Despite all that, on June 30 a judge denied him bail and kept him in custody.
What makes the story even more heartbreaking: Brandi had been widowed just six months earlier, during the 2025 holiday season. She went to work that Friday to support her daughters and never returned. The investigation is being handled by the federal Postal Inspection Service, the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
