GHEUWAN ARJA: THE MOTHER WHO PROTECTED HER SON’S HEART UNTIL HIS LAST BREATH
Motherhood is often defined by protection, but for Gheuwan Arja, protecting her son Omar meant hiding the cruelest reality from him. When doctors told her that her son’s cancer was terminal and that there was no hope left, Gheuwan made a decision that today divides many mothers.
Omar, a boy full of life despite his illness, always dreamed of beating cancer. Seeing that the end was near, his mother decided he would not leave as a victim. She organized a celebration for him, told him that his test results had come back clear, and that he was finally healthy. The little boy celebrated, laughed, and felt the pride of having defeated the giant that had afflicted him.
“I didn’t want him to be afraid,” Gheuwan confessed in subsequent interviews. For her, telling the truth to a child with no escape was condemning him to live his final days in mental agony. By lying to him, she gave him back his childhood, his hope, and his glory, even if she had to bear the weight of the truth and the impending grief alone.
What would you do?
The story has sparked a massive debate on social media.
On one hand, there are those who argue that the right to the truth is fundamental, even in childhood, in order to say goodbye with a clear conscience.
On the other hand, millions of mothers argue that a parent’s role is to prevent unnecessary suffering, and that dying happily is the greatest gift one can give a child.
Omar passed away shortly after his “victory,” unaware that his body was giving out, but with his spirit soaring high. He left like a champion, and his mother remained the heroine who sacrificed her own integrity for her little one’s peace.
