Nora Lussier clocked in for her shift like any other day in the neonatal intensive care unit at Beverly Hospital. She had no idea that the little baby who had been exposed to drugs before birth, and whom no one else could care for, would end up calling her mom.
Pamela’s biological parents were unable to care for her. Neither could the assigned foster family, because of the girl’s medical issues, including a feeding tube. Nora looked at her and thought: “Wow, she’s so cute”. Her coworkers kept urging her: take her home.
Her husband Martin, who at first had not expected to become a father so soon, was smitten as soon as he saw her smile under his roof. On July 17, Pamela’s second birthday, 25 loved ones — including ICU nurses — witnessed the official adoption. “We couldn’t have asked for a better little girl”, Nora says today.
