Piper was just 20 years old when he arrived in prison, without a trade or a firm faith, raised in Anchorage by a Baptist family that never found a church to settle in.
The night they executed Page, another death-row inmate, something broke inside him. From his cell, he demanded of God how He could allow something like that. There was no answer that night.
The following day, a Catholic priest appeared in his cell, saying that Piper had asked to speak with him. Piper swears he never made that request. It was there, facing a man who was not supposed to be there, that he asked the question that ended up rebuilding his faith from scratch, locked up in one of the most hopeless places that exist.
