On June 25, 2026, more than 261.000 Californians learned that a debt that had been weighing on them for years had just disappeared.

Behind it are Evan Spiegel, CEO of Snap, the company behind Snapchat, and his wife, model and businesswoman Miranda Kerr. The couple made a multimillion-dollar donation to Undue Medical Debt, a nonprofit organization that buys medical debt for a fraction of its value and then cancels it.
For every 10 dollars donated, an average of 1.000 dollars in debt is erased. That brought the total to more than 550 million dollars canceled, Undue’s largest statewide debt cancellation in California. The exact amount they donated was not disclosed.

No one has to submit an application or pay anything back. The organization identifies debts that meet its criteria, such as incomes of up to four times the federal poverty level or medical debt of at least 5 % of annual income, and cancels them. Starting in mid-July, families will receive a letter. Kerr asked them not to be wary: that letter is real.
