Debbie Mays worked as a teacher’s assistant at Ripley Primary School in Ripley, Tennessee. She was taken into custody on October 1.

The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office accuses her of child abuse. The alleged victim is a 5-year-old child with special needs, one of those students who depend entirely on the adults around them. Officers took witness statements, documented minor injuries to the little boy’s face, and learned what Mays had allegedly told other school employees about the incident. Based on that evidence, an arrest warrant was issued.
Sheriff Brian Kelley was direct: every report of abuse against a minor is taken seriously, “especially when the child involved is particularly vulnerable”. He also clarified that the investigation is still active and ongoing. The school district said it was aware of the case and had notified the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services and local police.

Mays faces a child abuse charge under state law. For now, it is an accusation: she has not been convicted, and authorities have not detailed exactly what happened in the classroom. Ripley Primary serves students from kindergarten through second grade, children who are just learning to talk about what happens to them.
