The Fukushima nuclear disaster left behind not only abandonment, but also “mutants”. Researchers in Japan warned about a population of “mutant super pigs” that multiplied out of control inside the radiation-contaminated zone.

It all began after the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami in 2011, when more than 164,000 people had to flee. Amid the chaos, domestic pigs were left free and ended up breeding with wild boars. The result: hybrids capable of reproducing year-round and spreading much faster than any normal species.

With no humans around, the population exploded. The damage caused by wild pigs already costs about 3.400 billion dollars a year.
