Paul Fitzgerald entered Richard Huckle’s cell at HMP Full Sutton prison, in East Yorkshire, in October 2019.

The attack lasted 78 minutes: according to the account given at the trial, he tied him up, raped and assaulted him before strangling him with an electrical cable. Afterwards, he said he wanted to cook and eat parts of his body.

Huckle, 33, was serving 22 life sentences, handed down in 2016 after he admitted 71 counts of sexual abuse against as many as 200 minors aged between six months and 12 years in Malaysia. Judge Lavender said Fitzgerald had presented the murder as “poetic justice” for Huckle’s crimes and had turned his violent fantasies into actions. Fitzgerald, 30, received a life sentence and will have to serve at least 34 years.
